“The Answer Might Surprise You”
How Soon Should I Begin Training My Puppy?
QUESTION:
How Soon Should I Begin Training My Puppy?
ANSWER.
Puppies start learning on their first day of life. For this reason, the day you bring your puppy home it should be thought of as “continuing” education. It’s never to early to begin teaching you puppy the rules, boundaries and appropriate behavior you want from them.
Young puppies have short attention spans. Certainly the juvenile stage of development is a very poor time to start teaching complexed behaviors. But you can expect them to begin to learn simple obedience commands as young as 7 to 8 weeks of age. These simple commands will probably include, “sit,” “stay,” and “down,” and in some cases “come.”
Just remember to keep training sessions very short. Under three minutes would be best. Also make sure you keep it fun for them. Make sure that your training also includes lots of playtime directly after the session.
